Have you ever dreamed of working from home, at your own pace and on your own schedule? Or how about making some extra money during your off-work hours? Becoming an Authorized Court Transcriptionist (ACT) may get you one step closer to achieving your career goals.

In 2014, the Ministry of the Attorney General announced a new model for transcript production in Ontario. This course will teach students the skills and knowledge required to produce transcripts of Ontario in-court proceedings under this new model. Upon successful completion, you will meet the transcript qualification standards set out by the Ministry of the Attorney General and will be eligible to become an ACT.

This course will be delivered online by two seasoned ACT professionals who have worked for several years in the education, transcription, and court reporting industries.

Students can ask questions and interact with the instructors live via the school’s webinar platform or asynchronously through the discussion forum on the learning management system. The final exam must be written in person at either our Toronto or Ottawa location.

Cost: CAD $725 + HST.

This program does not require approval under the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005.

Are you interested in a career in law but not sure if you want to go to law school? Being a digital legal monitor offers you the rare opportunity to be in the middle of the action of the legal profession without a law degree! Digital monitors are court reporters who use audio equipment to record legal proceedings while taking notes to supplement the recording. It is a little-known career path in the exciting field of litigation. Digital monitors are also responsible for other duties typical of a court reporter, such as marking exhibits and swearing in witnesses.

This course will examine the role and responsibilities of digital legal monitors, with a focus on pre-trial proceedings. Students will be provided with a brief overview of the court structure in Canada and the civil litigation process. This will lay the foundation for understanding what is involved in a pre-trial proceeding and the importance of the digital monitor’s role in this process. Finally, we will round off the course with a discussion on best practices, ethics, and guidelines for professional conduct.

This is a self-paced, online course. While it is designed to be taken in 4 weeks, students will have access to the course for 4 months. Students can write the online final exam at any time during these 4 months.

This course will be taught by an industry professional who has worked for several years as a court reporter, an educator, and, more recently, an Authorized Court Transcriptionist for the Ontario courts.
